There are a lot of wedding venues in Cancun, Mexico. And I have personally photographed a handful of them over the years. But when it came to this Moon Palace wedding, I honestly struggled about what to blog about. This place is HUGE. So huge that our hotel room came with a golf cart simply for us to get around the massive multi-complex property. So, where do I even begin?
First, let’s start with the property itself, shall we? It’s beautiful. And if you love golfing, you will love this place even more. The beach itself is sandy, but I don’t recommend swimming in the water out front. (At least, not in the conditions of the water when we were there during this wedding). That said, there are many, many pools on the property, and you will have plenty of options for your Cancun experience. Live MC’s were walking around and pumping up the crowd, there are plenty of kid-friendly activities for your guests’ kids, and there are some pools that are exclusive to those who upgrade their level of stay. (We got kicked out for not having a particular kind of wristband – maybe once, maybe twice, haha). And a quick note on kids — I have photographed “adults only” weddings in Cancun, and I have photographed “kids allowed” weddings in Cancun… and I can say with absolute certainty – those who have ‘adults only’ weddings in Mexico have more fun simply because they can “let loose” more.
And I say that as an average, not for EVERY wedding. I only say that based on experience from the many destination weddings I’ve personally photographed.
And if you are wondering if some people won’t show up if they can’t bring their kids, that’s sometimes true. But it’s a very low percentage of people.
As for the Moon Palace wedding itself, it was a HOT day. And by hot, I mean 100+ degrees with 100% humidity. Sweltering hot heat with sweat beading down your back sort of hot. And because of that, we jetted as quickly as possible from one shaded section to the next (whenever we could) and from one air-conditioned spot to the next.
Of course, none of those things were available during their first look, and not many places were available for full shade for their portrait session – but that’s why I get there 2 days early… so I can scout the exact locations I want to use for their wedding day portraits at the exact time of day as when their portraits are going to take place the following day.
Because of that, I know exactly where to be, when we will be there, how long it takes to get from Portrait Location 1 to Portrait Location 2, and so on.
Hiring the right destination wedding photographer is SO important. And having a destination wedding photographer that is experienced with the logistics that go into it all is crucial. And I am not just saying that because I am a destination wedding photographer. I am saying that because it’s the truth and I want the very best for you and your destination wedding experience.
